Get Up, Get Out, and Get Somethin'!
This morning I decided to wake up my brain cells and my blog and bring it back to life. This blog acted as my therapy and comfort zone for so long, my "feel good go-to spot" whenever I needed some motivation. I've been on a hiatus it seems and it's time to give it some lovin' again. The hardest thing about keeping a blog, I think, is to find new topics to write about that will keep my readers coming back for more. I always seem to resort back to the same general ideas; inspiration, motivation, positivity, etc. I tend to rave about my girlfriends and my family, and I usually include a quote or two containing someone else's wise words between the quotation marks. I find it hard to make a blog post humorous; my sense of humor only comes out best when I'm around my friends, and I don't have any awe-inspiring stories of my own to share either. But for some reason when I sat down here this morning, a song popped into my head. Not a song I've even listened to recently, but one that does include some inspiration and motivation in that pop music sort of way that everyone can relate to. Oddly enough, Outkast started singing to me in my head this morning, "get up, get out, and get something," and I was totally okay with it.
The age I'm at provides a vast array of possibility. My friends and I are all at different stages in our lives and are carefully following our own paths to see what comes next for us. Unlike when we were all in high school at the same time, and then all went on to college at the same time, things now are moving at different speeds and headed in different directions. I say that as long as we wake up each and every day and are thankful for the new day that lies ahead of us, we've already made a good start. With a mindset like that, which takes some practicing, it's easier to focus on the good things in our lives despite all of the "bad" that may be going on. Recently I had a close friend share her experience with me- she went down to Moore, Oklahoma for two weeks after the tornado to volunteer her time cleaning, demolishing, searching, talking, and helping in any way that she could, and in doing so her life changed. She realized that things that we think are a big deal in the day to day life are in fact insignificant to what it would be like to lose absolutely everything. To see what she saw and to speak to the people she spoke to absolutely made her realize how much we take for granted and how quickly things can change. I'm glad she shared her experience with me because it made me stop and reflect as well. We all see different things, we all learn through different experiences, and we all live our lives differently. That is truly what makes the world go round. I am very proud of my friends, and I am grateful that they are empathetic and caring and choose to constantly give to others, whether it be their career choices to help those in need, a few hours volunteering throughout a month, or two weeks in a devastated area, a little bit goes a long way. And a lot goes a really long way! If we could each begin our days just thinking, "get up, get out, and get something" then we have already set a goal for ourselves, and an attainable, positive goal for that matter. Getting up each morning is a start. Getting out and doing something productive with our time is even better.
You don't have to save the world, you don't have to give up your career to volunteer. If we can just remain thankful, grounded, polite, kind, and show a willingness to help, I believe we have succeeded. Just get up, get out, and get something.
